What a solid surface sheet is
U.S. Customs and Border Protection looked at an acrylic solid surface sheet sold for kitchen and bath counters. Its ruling says the sheet is made of acrylic resin with aluminum hydroxide as a filler, and it classes the sheet under plastics.
A Department of Veterans Affairs design guide calls a solid surface countertop solid and nonporous, with a smooth look and no seams that show. On the solid surface we fit, nonporous means the top has no tiny holes for spills to soak into. The guide says it is easy to clean and keep up, and that with proper cleaning it does not support the growth of mold.
Outlets along your new counter
The City of North Charleston's electrical permit page lists, among the things its inspectors check, that countertop outlets must be GFCI protected. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says a GFCI, short for ground fault circuit interrupter, is a device installed in your electrical system or built into a power cord to protect you from severe electrical shocks.
The city's page also says only a licensed electrician or a residential home builder can get an electrical permit. If your new counter means adding or moving outlets, we'll tell you at the measure visit so that work can be planned before we set the top.
When the sink or pipes move
The City of North Charleston has its own plumbing permit, and its page says no work can be done until a permit is issued. It asks for a proposal or contract with the scope of work, including what the materials and labor cost.
The same page says the permit card must be posted in a permit box somewhere easy to see on the property, and that an inspector won't inspect a job site missing its permit drawings and permit box. It also says a permit is good for 6 months, and if no inspection happens in that time it expires and the process starts again. When we measure, we'll tell you if your layout moves the sink far enough to need one.
Hot pans and solid surface
Volume 6 of The Rehab Guide covers kitchens and baths. It says solid surface expands when hot and will crack if a hot pot is set on it. On any solid surface top we fit, we'd have you keep a hot pad or pan stand by the stove.
