Outdoor kitchen countertops at a house

We build outdoor kitchen tops for North Charleston backyards, from a small grill island to a full patio bar. First we help you pick a surface for outside and plan where the grill and outlets go. Then we fit a top made to the size of your island.

Outlets and sinks: sort them out before the stone

If your outdoor kitchen will have lights, a fridge or a sink, the wiring and pipes come before the top. The City of North Charleston says only a licensed electrician or a residential home builder can get an electrical permit. The same city page says countertop outlets must be GFCI protected. A GFCI, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says, is a device built into your wiring or a power cord that protects you from severe electric shocks.

If you want a sink, ask your plumber about that side of the job. North Charleston keeps a separate plumbing permit, and its page says no work can be done until that permit is issued. We plan the holes in your top around where the electrician and plumber put their lines, so it helps to have them booked before we measure.

Picking a surface that handles the weather

Rain matters when you choose a stone for outside. The U.S. Geological Survey says granite is mostly silicate minerals, such as feldspar and quartz, which hold up against acid. It says marble and limestone are mostly calcite, a mineral that dissolves readily in weak acid. When acids in polluted air and rain reach the calcite in those stones, the USGS says the calcite dissolves.

We also fit porcelain, concrete, quartzite and soapstone outside, and each one has its own page with more detail.

Spacing the grill and the fire pit

The U.S. Fire Administration tells you to set a grill well away from siding and deck rails, and not under eaves or tree branches. It also asks for a 3-foot safe zone around the grill so children and pets stay clear. A fire pit needs more room. The same agency says to keep outdoor fireplaces and fire pits at least 10 feet from your home or anything that can burn. We lay out your counters so those gaps stay open.

Serving food outside on a hot day

A long July barbecue can test how you lay out the counter. In heat above 90 °F, the USDA says food should never sit out for more than 1 hour. It also says not to set cooked food on a platter that held raw meat or poultry. If you want a spot on the counter for a clean serving platter well away from the raw prep area, tell us and we'll size the top for it.

Your written quote

We give you a price in writing after we measure. The cost depends on which material you pick, how many square feet of counter we cover, the edge shape, and how many cutouts we make for the grill, a sink or side burners. Whoever you hire, make sure the paperwork shows:

  • The material's name, color, finish and thickness.
  • A drawing with each seam and cutout marked on it.
  • The edge you chose, and the sealer if the stone needs one.
  • Who builds the base the top sits on.
  • Who connects the grill, the gas, the water and the power.
  • Whether taking away an old top is part of the price.

Questions about outdoor kitchen countertops in North Charleston

Does my HOA have to approve outdoor kitchen wiring?

It might. The City of North Charleston lists a homeowners association letter of approval, if one applies, among the papers to send in for an electrical permit. If your street has an HOA, it is worth asking them early.

What does North Charleston charge for a plumbing permit?

The city's plumbing permit fee chart lists a $30.00 filing fee that is not refunded, plus $3.50 for each plumbing fixture. We'll go over with you which fixtures your outdoor kitchen will have.

Does a drain line to the sewer need its own permit?

The City of North Charleston says any work on the sewer needs an extra permit from the sewer district. When we measure, we'll point out where your sink drain would run so your plumber can check.

Will you cut the stone in my backyard?

An OSHA and NIOSH hazard alert tells countertop firms to do as much of the cutting as they can in the shop, not at the house. OSHA says silicosis is an incurable lung disease that can lead to disability and death. Ask any installer where your top will be cut and how they control the dust.

How should I clean the counter after grilling?

FoodSafety.gov says to wash countertops with hot, soapy water, most of all after raw meat, poultry, seafood or eggs have been on them. The U.S. Fire Administration adds that you should clean the grill itself after each use, since leftover grease can start a fire.

What do you need from me before you measure?

We need the grill maker's cutout size for the built-in grill you've chosen, plus any sink or side burner you plan to add. We'll cut the top to those numbers.

Can the bar side sit higher than the cooking side?

Yes, we can fit a raised bar ledge on one side of your island so guests can pull up stools while you cook on the lower side.

Can my patio top match the counters in my kitchen?

Yes, we can price the same stone for both, or a different one outside, and quote them together. See our kitchen countertops page for the indoor side.

What if my outdoor top already has a chip or crack?

Send us a clear photo, or have us stop by. We'll say whether a countertop repair makes sense or if that piece needs replacing.
